Offered here is a hand crafted
Fratelli Patricola CL2, grenadilla wood, Bb clarinet
. This model features six rings and 18 keys, plus an added tone hole for the throat tone Bb (photo 2). It comes with two barrels, a 65 mm and a 66 mm. Also included with the sale is a Blaymann "H" mouthpiece and a Rovner ligature and cap. This instrument has just been professionally refurbished from top to bottom, by a craftsman with over 60 years experience, and plays like a charm.
After a short "test drive" I'd describe it as a Jimmy John's clarinet - freaky fast. The tone is rich and focused, but with little effort I could make it much bigger and brighter. (My Leblanc LL has a slightly darker tone.) The intonation seemed wonderfully consistent. The response is fantastically quick. I can see why this instrument is so popular with symphonic players in many of the European orchestras.
The Patricola Company began making oboes and clarinets in 1976 and now employs nine craftsmen. Each instrument is hand crafted in their Castelnuovo Scrivia factory. The wood used in their instruments is aged for eleven to thirteen years. The keys are custom made and hand fitted to each instrument. The action on this instrument is amazingly smooth.
Over my sixty plus years of playing, I've tried many clarinets and this, I believe, is the finest I've ever played. I'm tempted to buy it, but my wife informed me that I don't need it.
