Description
This remarkable 40 1/4" x 26 3/4" hooked rug dates from the late 1800's...most likely around 1892 judging by the HAIL COLUMBIA motto boldly worked into the one-of-a-kind design. Borrowing from the theme of Samson and the Lion, the allegory probably extends to the triumph of the US over Great Britain, the latter which is often represented by a lion. As the images show, the earthy palette is accented in orange and red and the presentation has pleasing, graphic boldness. The last owner spent almost 500 dollars on professional conservation, and the textile was gently cleaned and sewn/mounted to a wooden frame protected by acid free fabric. Historic and folkloric, the piece has surprisingly modernist appeal when hanging.WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS. Please contact for international shipping cost quote.
