Description
Triumph Bonneville. 1966 Triumph Bonneville T120R, 650cc RESTO-MOD As featured on the cover of the “Café Racer” magazine, this numbers-matching Triumph resto-mod was built by Scott Thomas, owner of Triumph Restorations of Illinois.Scott is a factory-trained Triumph mechanic with over 50 years’ experience restoring and modifying Triumph motorcycles and is a renowned expert in British motorcycles and Smiths gauges. His company has produced numerous 100-point restorations as well as custom machines built to the exacting specifications of his customers. He is also a federally licensed airframe and power plant technician with a major air carrier and has extensive experience in machining and welding. No expense was spared in building this exceptional 1966 Bonneville, which combines the best of the classic Triumph engine and frame with modern, trouble-free suspension, electrical systems, and engine performance and lubrication. From the frame up, this build includes only the highest quality parts and sophisticated assembly techniques to produce a beautiful, high-performance, one-of-a-kind motorcycle that you can ride every day. Clear title and all documentation are available. Engine70 miles since complete rebuild with premium components throughout.*9.5-1 compression ratio pistons, +.020 oversize with ceramic-coated domes and Teflon-coated skirts for extra durability and low friction. Gapless rings provide maximum sealing and oil control.*Crankshaft assembly is balanced to 85% factor which reduces the perceptible vibration inherent in the vertical twin design.*Stock head is machined to accept 2 spark plugs per cylinder for increased combustion efficiency. Ignition is provided by dual-lead coils with NGK resistor-type plug caps feeding two NGK CXR8HRX IX and two NGK BR8EIX IX iridium spark plugs for maximum power and reliability.*T140 (750) intake cam with increased lift and duration improves performance without sacrificing reliability or engine life. It provides a strong, wide powerband, a smooth idle, and easy starting.* Lubrication is provided by a Morgo rotary-style oil pump which can deliver twice the volume of the standard plunger pump even at extremely high temperatures. This advanced design eliminates the common problem of sticking ball valves in the standard pump which causes loss of pressure, scavenge or both – often with disastrous results.*A Triumph Trident oil filter system keeps the oil clean, and a Kawasaki GPZ550 oil cooler maintains proper oil temperature even on hot days or for touring or aggressive sport riding. Oil-tight connections are ensured by Aeroquip oil lines and fittings throughout.*Late model tappet guides and O-ring style pushrod tubes, as well as 6-bolt T140 rocker box assemblies virtually eliminate the top-end oil leaks that were nearly inevitable on 650 twins of this vintage. *Crankcase ventilation is provided by the Britech system which was developed for their highly successful Triumph racing machines. This system includes an internal baffle and one/way PCV valve which increase engine efficiency, reduce sludge, and help prevent oil leakage between the crankcase halve*The USA-made MAP primary drive system consists of a lightened steel front pulley with a hardened aluminum clutch basket and a proprietary Uniroyal belt. The stock hub shock absorber is retained to reduce transmission stress, and the dry clutch features eight times more surface area on the plate tangs for extra-long service and the longest basket life without grooving. The entire system runs dry, which eliminates sticking plates and missed shifts or gear grinding. An L.P. Williams hydraulic clutch actuator replaces the unreliable stock cable, and the primary cover has been vented for additional cooling and a unique, high-performance appearance.*Final drive system uses 520 countershaft and rear sprockets to reduce weight and increase efficiency, and includes a custom hand-made alloy chain guard.Induction and exhaust*Fuel is delivered by two 32mm Mikuni carburetors which provide crisp throttle response, more power, and better fuel efficiency than the stock 30mm Amals. 90-degree throttle cable guides eliminate binding and K&N air filters provide superior filtering and airflow vs the stock paper-element filters.*A ceramic-coated 2 into 1 crossover exhaust system with a reverse-cone megaphone improves scavenging for better performance and provides the crisp exhaust note of a classic British twin.Electrical system*The notorious “Prince of Darkness” single-phase Lucas alternator and charging system have been completely replaced by a Sparx 3 phase alternator set with a Sparx solid-state electronic regulator and rectifier module. A custom wiring harness provides secure connections for all components, ensures a fully charged battery, and supplies the extra power needed for the modern ignition and lighting systems. *All electrical connections are simplified by a Moto Gadget digital controller and M-Lock keyless ignition switch. The advanced design of these components digitally monitors each circuit individually, and if a fault occurs the unit automatically disconnects the circuit and identifies the issue with a flashing LED. This allows the rider to quickly locate and correct the problem and get back on the road. No more blown fuses and painstaking troubleshooting which was so common (and so maddening) on older British motorcycles. *The stock headlamp is supported by Spiegler alloy mounting brackets and a quartz-halogen lamp provides extra-bright lighting for safer night riding.*Custom Dynamics Tail/brake light with integrated turn signals and hydraulically activated brake switches enhance visibility and safety.*Dual horns have a clear, loud tone that can be heard even in noisy traffic situations.Frame and suspension*Powder-coated stock T120 frame with late model side stand.*Custom, high-capacity oil tank and battery box are rubber-mounted to eliminate broken brackets.*Kawasaki ZX6R front forks and dual disc brakes ensure maximum stopping power, excellent damping, and eliminate brake fade in all weather conditions. A single rear disc is fitted to complete the system. All hydraulic connections are made with Spiegler stainless steel braided brake and clutch hoses.*Premium GAZI Hyper X gas shocks are fully adjustable to suit road conditions and rider preferences.Wheels and tires*Front wheel includes a 1976 Triumph front hub, SUN anodized alloy 19” front rim, and a Bridgestone EXEDRA MAX 120/70-R19 tire for exceptional grip and control.*Rear wheel Includes a SUN anodized alloy 18” rim and extra-wide Bridgestone EXEDRA MAX 140/70-R18 tire. This tire provides additional traction and the swingarm has been widened to accept the additional width.*Both wheels are hand-laced with Buchanan stainless steel spokes and precision balanced to eliminate vibration.Controls and finish*Instrumentation consists of a Smiths magnetic speedometer with a custom white face for additional visibility, and a Cycle 8,000 RPM electronic tachometer.*The stock tank is fitted with a Pingle fuel petcock and a hand-applied “Triumph” logo with gold-leaf lettering. All graphics are hand painted and a clearcoat finish is applied to ensure durability and maintain the unique appearance of this machine.*An Air-Tech fiberglass seat provides rider comfort and custom handlebar end-mounted adjustable mirrors provide rear visibility for the rider.1966 T120R 70 miles since complete rebuildEngine650cc .020 ovs9.5-1 compression ratio pistonsCeramic-coated piston domesTeflon coated piston skirtsGapless ringsT140 intake camshaftT120 exhaust camshaft4 sparkplug cylinder head32mm Mikuni carburetorsK&N air filtersM.A.P Belt drive systemMagura Hydraulic chutch master cylinderL.P.
